Editorial : University must support international student programs

The administration is continuing a nationwide trend of accepting and enrolling more international students for next year’s incoming class. The increase is expected to be between 20 and 25 percent.

With this increase in mind, Syracuse University must also expand and support the programs for international students. International students struggle mostly with English language skills and expectations at an American university.

The services offered by the Slutzker Center for International Services and the other support groups on campus do help international students adjust to campus. But the center’s resources are extremely limited and have been for years. To counter these difficulties, the university must listen to concerns from the support centers, such as hiring more staff members to work in the Slutzker Center.

Pat Burak, the director of the Slutzker Center, said she has requested an increase in staff for several years. The university must listen to these requests and either hire more staff members or work with the center to find another suitable solution.

Another avenue to consider is to bring international students to campus earlier for orientation. Administrators could use that time for one-on-one interactions with students to help remove any language barriers and get the students acclimated to the American learning system.

The university has prioritized diversifying the student body by bringing in more students from outside the Northeast, including more international students. In turn, it is only logical that the university prioritize the support system for international students.
