Editorial : Viral video requires students to educate themselves on issues
Social media efforts threw the ‘Kony 2012′ video into the national spotlight earlier this month.
The video has more than 85.7 million views on YouTube and sparked a nationwide discussion. The discussion made its way to Syracuse University, where a panel was held Monday night to discuss the topic. Students must remember with this video and the subsequent discussion to examine all sides before making a decision.
Some people call the video informative on the issue. Others call it propaganda. Regardless, the video tugs viewers’ heartstrings and brings them into the issue through the stories of young children.
Students must remember to find out substantive information on the issue and not rely on just one source. By doing substantive research, students become more involved and knowledgeable in the political debate. If students are aware of different viewpoints, they can help spread their knowledge to others on campus. It can create a more informed student body.
Although the video may be coming from one source and have a specific political motive, it serves as a good jumping off point to start a conversation. To have an effective conversation, it must be an informed one.
The ‘Kony 2012′ discussion does not seem to be going away. As the discussion continues, students owe it to themselves to make sure they are informed of all sides.
