Real Estate to perform indie show
During a week of fleeting warm weather, the Schine Underground will fill with shimmery summertime music courtesy of indie rockers Real Estate.
The Bandersnatch Music Series is returning Wednesday with its second show of the semester. New Jersey natives Real Estate will headline the show accompanied by opening band Half Sister. Tickets are still for sale at the Schine Box Office for $5 for students with a valid Syracuse University or State University of New York College of Environmental Science Forestry ID. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the concert starts at 8 p.m.
University Union teamed up with WERW Real College Radio to promote the show. Tickets for both Wednesday’s UU Real Estate concert and WERW’s show featuring Titus Andronicus on Thursday night can be purchased as a discounted total price of $8.
Real Estate’s name is dedicated to the suburban setting where the band was formed. The group released its debut self-titled album in 2009 and has since garnered the interest of various music reviewers, including Pitchfork, who had them in contention for Best New Music honors of 2010. Aside from this recognition, however, the band remains mostly unknown to listeners outside of the indie genre.
Jonathan Groffman, executive adviser to the Bandersnatch Music Series, said this concert will incorporate a genre of music that Bandersnatch has overlooked in the last couple of years.
‘Indie rock is becoming more popular on college campuses,’ he said. ‘It’s taken a while because of students’ mainstream interests, but people are getting more into alternative music.’
The band’s latest full-length album, ‘Days,’ was released through Domino Records, a recording company known for giving its artists the freedom to experiment with their music. Real Estate’s songs unwind gently under a muffled sound that lends their music a dreamy, oldies-radio-like essence.
The show marks Real Estate’s first time playing in the area, butopener Half Sister is no stranger to SU. Three current members of the band met at a show while attending SU, where the idea of the band was conceptualized.
Half Sister formed earlier this year and has quickly made an impression with music featured on NBC’s ‘The Voice’ along with other shows on MTV and ABC. The band returned in mid-March to perform and record three songs on CitrusTV’s music television show ‘Loud and Clear.’
Though tickets are still available, Groffman said he expects this show to compare well to the semester’s first sellout concert a month ago, which featured alternative rock band Cults.
‘We’ve noticed that for indie-rock shows a lot of people purchase tickets the day of,’ he said. ‘So we are expecting this one to still sell out.’
