Editorial : Relay For Life raises awareness, support
Syracuse University’s Relay for Life provides an easy opportunity for the university community to help make a difference in the fight against cancer.
On Saturday night, more than 2,000 community members gathered in the Carrier Dome to raise money for cancer research and to help provide free services to cancer patients. The event also remembers those who have died from cancer and supports those still struggling with the disease.
Half of all men and one-third of all women will develop some type of cancer in their lifetimes. But cancer doesn’t only affect those diagnosed with the disease. Many students on campus, though they may not personally have the disease, likely know someone who does.
There will be 5,000 different relay events in more than 50 countries this year, making it one of the largest fundraisers in the world.
Last year, the SU Relay for Life event raised more than $175,000. The event is on track to generate a similar amount this year. The relay event does more than just raise money. It also raises support and awareness.
For all those directly or indirectly affected by cancer, relay reminds them they are not alone. Seeing 2,000 people gathered in the Dome all supporting the same cause can be reassuring to those who are dealing with cancer in their lives.
Although the event raises money for cancer, it is lively and features different activities throughout the overnight event. Students can participate in Zumba, and there is live music and activities such as jousting. But there are somber events, too, including a survivor lap and a luminaria ceremony to honor those who have died.
Regardless of how community members have been affected by cancer, Relay for Life provides an opportunity for the community to work together toward a common goal: fighting cancer.
