Archbold Gymnasium opened at the scheduled time on Monday despite a steam leak that led to the evacuation of the building late Sunday night.

The pipe was fixed and the resulting condensation was cleaned up on Sunday night, said Commander Andrew Morzienski of the Department of Public Safety. No long-term effects are expected.

A Department of Recreation Services attendant noticed a musky smell on the lower level of the building shortly before 10 p.m., said Cassie Pettinati, operations supervisor for Archbold. When Pettinati, who is a sophomore interior design major, went downstairs to investigate, she discovered a leak in the pipes that hang from the ceiling of the hallway adjacent to the laundry room. The musky smell and heat in the area was intense, she added.

DPS received a call at 9:58 p.m. and responded immediately, Morzienski said. Not knowing what type of leak it was, DPS officers called the Syracuse Fire Department to be “better safe than sorry,” he said, adding that the fire department is better equipped to identify gas leaks.

For the same reason, DPS and recreation services officials decided to evacuate the building. By 10:30 p.m., no one was left inside.

In addition to the fire department and DPS, the Physical Plant also responded to the leak.
