Syracuse retired quarterback Don McPherson’s jersey at halftime of the SU-Clemson game on Saturday. McPherson, who finished as the Heisman Trophy runner-up in the Orangemen’s undefeated 1987 season, stood at midfield wearing a light brown sweater.

McPherson acknowledged the crowd and spoke briefly, recognizing other Syracuse greats who have had their numbers retired.

Syracuse director of athletics Daryl Gross and chancellor Nancy Cantor clapped as McPherson held up his No. 9 jersey, which was white and framed. McPherson placed his arm around his former coach Dick MacPherson as the Orange crowd applauded.

McPherson is the sixth Syracuse player to have his jersey retired. Quarterback Donovan McNabb will become the seventh on Nov. 2 against Wake Forest.

SU trails Clemson 35-7 at the half. Tigers’ quarterback Tajh Boyd is 18-of-23 with 363 yards and four touchdowns.
