From the Runway

Festival-inspired looks to wear all summer long

From the Runway writer Hannah Malach crafted three festival-inspired outfits perfect for summer days.

In the days of Woodstock, music festivals were known as an oasis of hippies, full of fans dancing to the sounds of their favorite artists. Over the years, music festivals have found their way into the glamorous world of celebrities and, by proxy, the fashion spotlight.

It even seems that the music falls by the wayside in favor of “how to get celebrity festival looks,” and needless to say this article is no exception. However, no music lover can deny that the right outfit can either carry you far or have your feet killing you by day one. That being said, here are some fun, and mostly practical looks you can rock for summer — and their must-have accessory counterparts — inspired by some of your favorite festivals.

Coachella

Coachella may be over, but as perhaps the most fashion-centric festival on this list, it leaves an endless amount of outfit inspirations. Embrace the heat with a flowy dress, like this one from Brandy Melville — the floral print is perfect for the season. Dresses like these are great for the summer, as they’re light and breathable, yet stylish, and perfect for feeling casual but looking a little dressy at the same time.

If your dress of choice tends to be on the skin-bearing side, just throw on a pretty lacey bralette underneath — the one pictured is from Aerie. Although they may not be the most practical for festival season, a chic pair of sandals tie this look together for any other summer occasion. Add on some of festival season’s hottest accessories, like cool aviators, a statement headpiece or a pastel polaroid camera, and you’re ready to go.

Glastonbury

This British festival is known for one item and one item only: wellies, or as we Americans call them, rain boots. Although it may not pour here like it does across the pond, a good pair may come in handy if you’re in a place with unpredictable weather. I like this bright blue shade, which provides a summery pop of color. As for clothing, this rainbow-striped dress from UNIF is also great for in-between weather — it’s leg-bearing, but still features a turtleneck and thin knit fabric.

Channel style icon and Glastonbury regular Alexa Chung by throwing on a pair of sunnies — these cat-eye Tom Ford lookalikes are from The Cobra Shop. Lastly, for your festival essential, a crossbody bag is just large enough to fit your phone, wallet and perhaps a makeup product or two. Whether you’re running to catch electronica newbies Years & Years or classics like New Order and Fatboy Slim, or just spending a rainy summer day out and about, this look is sure to be a showstopper.

Governors Ball

As Coachella’s slightly edgier New York counterpart, Governors Ball — or as it’s affectionately nicknamed, Gov Ball — is less known for its celebrity scene. However, that doesn’t make it any less legendary, especially with headliners like Kanye West and The Strokes this year. To get a cool Gov Ball-worthy look, simply throw on a black tee and some cut-offs. Because this look can border on basic, I suggest adding some layers to make it a little less plain — an oversized flannel or leather jacket, depending on the weather, will do just fine. I added another layer to tie around the waist, once again for either warmth or fashion.

As for your must-have accessory for festival season, I suggest a pair of practical shoes, because like every true New Yorker knows, a walkable pair make the outfit. Style doesn’t have to suffer for practicality, so to keep both values in mind, I decided on a pair of Doc Martens. These ones have a slightly reddish tint to them when hit by the sun, which is an edgy alternative to the typical plain black. These shoes will go with almost any outfit, so they’re also perfect if you’re trying to pack on the lighter side.
