Two instances of bias-motivated graffiti have been present in Day Hall since August, Syracuse University’s Department of Public Safety confirmed in a bias incident report Thursday.

Students reported the graffiti on Wednesday and Thursday. DPS confirmed the graffiti was present during student move-in in August.

The two acts of graffiti had not been removed months after being drawn, DPS reported. Both bias incidents are currently under active investigation, according to the report.

Residents in Day Hall reported the word “Jew” was carved into a door on the third floor, while a resident advisor discovered the N-word was etched into a door on the fifth floor. The residents of the associated fifth floor room confirmed the etching had been there when they moved in, DPS reported.

DPS reviewed photography to confirm graffiti on the third floor and interviewed floor residents to confirm the graffiti on the fifth floor.

“Our team continues to conduct interviews and review security footage; however, at this time, it is unclear who may be responsible for these two incidents,” Craig Stone, SU’s chief of campus safety and emergency management services, wrote in the report.

DPS is currently reviewing security footage and conducting interviews as part of its open investigation, according to the DPS bias incident tracker.

Students who wish to report a bias incident or to receive support can contact DPS at (315) 443-3514, email stopbias@syr.edu or visit the Stop Bias website. Students can report incidents using the Silent Witness tool or the Orange Safe mobile app.
