10:48 a.m., April 29, 2024 – Several dozen people start setting up tents on Syracuse University’s Shaw Quadrangle in front of Hendricks Chapel Monday Morning. The encampment began on the university’s last day of classes for the spring semester.

10:54 a.m., April 29, 2024 – SU administrators hand out papers that remind student protestors of their rights and responsibilities. Although protestors did not set up their tents in the designated spot, university administrators and DPS did not take action.

12:21 p.m., April 29, 2024 – Protestors continue to arrive throughout the day and set up tents. By this time, 15 tents were set up with little DPS presence.

3:18 p.m., April 29, 2024 – Throughout the sunny day, some protesters came and went, but many stayed through the night. The encampment stayed quiet all day.

5:39 p.m., April 29, 2024 – Into the evening, more signs are created and displayed. Several of the signs featured some of protestors’ demands for the university.

7:06 p.m., April 29, 2024 – With the end of the school and work day, more protesters begin setting up camp on the Shaw Quad. Between 6:30 p.m. and 11 p.m., the encampment doubled in size, growing from 20 to 40 tents.

10:55 p.m., April 29, 2024 – Protestors begin preparing to spend their first night in the encampment. Nightfall over the campus brought a quiet lull in the dim light to the quad for night one.

5:50 a.m., April 30, 2024 – As the sun begins to rise, protesters make their way from their individual tents to the food tent for breakfast. Coffee and bagels were donated by people in support of the encampment.

8:12 a.m., April 30, 2024 – Candles are placed on the list of people killed in Gaza. The list includes more than 34,000 victims and was placed to the side of the encampment.

1:15 p.m., April 30, 2024 – Yaffa S.A., executive director of the Muslim Alliance for Sexual and Gender Diversity, spoke about the importance of the encampment. They encouraged the audience to show care and support for one another.

5:14 p.m., April 30, 2024 – Meals for the protesters are provided to them by encampment organizers and supporters. People’s Place Cafe, located in Hendricks Chapel, was among the supporters who donated food.

10:33 p.m., April 30, 2024 – After nearly 36 hours in the encampment, the protestors appeared to be practicing a safety measure that they had been planning.

10:58 a.m., May 1, 2024 – 48 hours after the first tent was set up, the encampment expanded to more than 60 tents. There are no clear signs of an end to the protest.
