Syracuse men’s, women’s cross country sweep opener in Colgate

Syracuse men’s and women’s cross country swept their season openers with an impressive showing at the Harry Lang Invitational in Hamilton. The invite, hosted by Colgate, saw the Orange end with several top-place finishers in the 6K and 5K races.
In the men’s 6K, Syracuse led the pack with 15 points. The next closest finisher was Colgate, which came in 35 points behind SU. Binghamton ended the afternoon in third place with 77 points, with Buffalo (109 points) and Manhattan (135 points) completing the top five.
The men’s team compiled a total time of 97:32.3 with an average time of 19:30.5. Finishing in first place was sophomore Julian Franjieh with a time of 19:18.2. Sophomore Eamon Burke wasn’t too far behind in second place, ending with a time of 19:25.3. Junior Kamari Miller (19:31.3) placed third on the afternoon, with sophomore Ruben Rojas Betanzos (19:35.7), sophomore Solomon Holden-Betts (19:41.8) and junior Gabriel Planty (19:45.7) rounding out the top six spots.
For the women’s 5K race, the Orange finished with 15 points, blowing past second-place Buffalo, which ended with 62 points. Colgate earned third with 73 points, while Manhattan (114 points) and Binghamton (130 points) took fourth and fifth place, respectively.
Syracuse had a total time of 91:44.5 with an average time of 18:20.9 in the 5K. Senior Baneet Bains was first to cross the finish line with a time of 18:15.3. Coming in second was junior Madeline Heintz, ending with a time of 18:19.4. Freshman Jayden Harberts had a strong afternoon, finishing with a time of 18:21.5 and securing third place. Fellow freshman Grace Finnegan grabbed fourth place with a time of 18:23.1. The Orange women claimed the top eight finishes in the 5K, with sophomore Beatriz Fernandes (18:25.2), junior Bethany Steiner (18:26.1), sophomore Justus Holden-Betts (18:36.0) and junior Olivia Shattuck (18:49.8) capturing the last four spots.
The Orange couldn’t have asked for a better way to kickstart the 2024 campaign. They’ll search to keep the momentum going at their second meet of the season on Friday, Sept. 13, for the Spiked Shoe Invitational at Penn State.
