Editorial : Carr’s resignation brings light to potential problems in SA
Taylor Carr’s resignation from chief of staff of Student Association is a red flag to both students and SA members.
Carr said he was disgruntled by the lack of activity happening in SA. The chief of staff’s job is to advise the president and vice president on initiatives. Carr said he was unable to do his job because no initiatives were moving forward.
Last semester, Carr ran against Dylan Lustig for the presidency and was praised for his dedication to students during his campaign. After losing by a large margin, Carr decided to remain in the organization and eventually earned the chief of staff nomination from Lustig. Carr remained in the position for nearly half the term but decided on Monday it was not in his interest to continue.
Lustig did not announce or address losing such an important member of the organization at Monday night’s SA meeting. He said he will have a chief of staff in place by the start of next semester.
If Carr was so disgruntled that he felt he had to leave SA, students must begin to look more critically at what is happening within the association. It may signal that there is a real problem with the student governing body. Broadcasting this message can help bring potential problems within the student government to light.
SA members must take Carr’s resignation seriously and take time to critically look into what the organization is doing. Students must also take this seriously and pay more attention to how the university’s student government is functioning.
